In class we discussed IQ testing and the possible negative and positive aspects of it. Personally, I think that IQ testing can have both positive and negative effects, and can have its place in education if it is used properly. An IQ test can give the teacher an idea of where the students learning ability stands. This would be helpful to a teacher at the beginning of the year to see where all the students are at. It could also help determine different types of learning strategies that would benefit different children. If you had this information at the beginning of a school year, you could plan activities and lessons based on the different learning strategies that are prominent in your classroom.
However IQ testing at the beginning of the year could have a negative outcome as well. The score that each child receives could create negative stereotyping by the teacher. If a student receives a low score, the teacher could assume that they don’t have the ability to do well. Similarly, the student may score very high, and the teacher might put more pressure on that child by giving them extra responsibilities. Another negative outcome that may come about could come from the child finding out their score. If they have a low score they may assume that they are stupid and end up not trying.
I think that an IQ test can be used by the teacher to assist the student in their learning. If a teacher knows how a student learns, they can use this to help the student learn.
